The headboard of the IKEA Malm bed now has LED strips on the left and right, set flush into aluminium profiles and controlled with WLED, just like the glowing moon.

Result: one light strip on each side of the headboard

The victim

Cardboard

The headboard is basically just corrugated cardboard. Between two thin cover panels there is a cardboard honeycomb core, with a wooden strip only around the edge.

The slot

For each profile I made two parallel cuts along the guide rail and lifted off the cover layer in between with a chisel.

Underneath, the cardboard appears. I cut out the honeycomb with scissors.

Something for the screws to hold

Screws don’t hold in cardboard. So I glued wooden strips into the slot, and the aluminium profiles are screwed into those.

Electronics

The strips are connected to an ESP32 controller from Gledopto running WLED, bought on AliExpress. Power comes from a Mean Well power supply with 5 V and 6 A. That is more than the two strips in the headboard need, but I have installed more LED strips.
